How To Check KRA Penalties Online

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) normally imposes a penalty for failure to file KRA Returns by taxpayers both individuals and non-individuals. Since our main focus is on individuals, the penalty is normally Kshs. 2,000/= per year not filed. So, you take the penalty amount and multiply it by the number of year(s) which you have not filed your KRA Returns and you will get the total amount of penalties due.

The only way to get the exact year(s) you have not filed your KRA Returns and how much penalties you might owe Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is to login to your KRA Portal (iTax Portal) account to check if you have any KRA Penalties in your account for either failure to file your KRA Returns or filing your Tax Returns past the set deadline which is normally 30th of June each year for individual taxpayers in Kenya.

For you to be able to check your KRA Penalties online, you need to access your iTax Portal (KRA Portal) account using two key requirements i.e. KRA PIN Number and KRA Password (iTax Password). These two requirements form what is referred to as the iTax Login Credentials. This is because to be able to login to iTax, you need to have both your KRA PIN Number and KRA Password (iTax Password). Below is a brief description of what each of these two key requirements needed in checking KRA Penalties online entails.

Step 4: Fill the e-Payment and e-Payment Registration Form

Checking the KRA Penalties requires one to first fill in the e-Payment and e-Payment Registration Form that contains the details of tax obligations and much more on iTax Portal (KRA Portal).

  • e-Payment Form

e-Payment Form

The e-Payment form displays the applicant type, taxpayer KRA PIN Number and taxpayer name. There is not much to do here, so click on the “Next” button to load the e-Payment Registration Form.

  • e-Payment Registration Form

In this form, you need to fill in the form details as follows: Tax Head – Income Tax; Tax Sub Head – Income Tax Resident Individual (0101) and Payment Type – Self Assessment Tax. After filling in these 3 fields on the form, the details of tax liabilities will be populated in the “Liability Details” section of the form. From the form, you will be able to see all the Penalties that you might be having for filing KRA Returns late. But the good news is that starting from 1st September 2023 to 30th June 2024, KRA is giving a Tax Amnesty for all liabilities and interests upto the period ending 31st December 2022. This is a fresh start for all taxpayers with KRA Penalties in Kenya.

So, if you know you have penalties up to that period, there is a 100% Amnesty. If you have only penalties and interests, you don’t need to apply for KRA Tax Amnesty as the system will clear all that for you. On the other hand, if you have an unpaid principal tax, penalties and interest, you have to Apply for KRA Tax Amnesty online, pay the principal tax due and KRA will remove all the penalties and interests accrued as at 31st December 2022, this is definitely a good thing that taxpayers need to take advantage of. So, next time you want to check for KRA Penalties, just follow the outlined 4 steps above.
