The process of filing Turnover Tax (TOT) Returns on KRA Portal normally revolves around 5 phases i.e. downloading the returns form, filling in the returns form, uploading the returns form, generating payment slip for the tax return and finally making payment of the tax due to Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). So far, we have covered the first 2 phases and this article will be addressing the 3rd phase, uploading the Turnover Tax Returns Form.

As we had previously mentioned, any taxpayer who is registered under the Turnover Tax (TOT) obligation is required by Law to file his or her TOT Return for the previous month on or before the elapse of the 20th day of the month deadline. Failure to which, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) will impose a penalty for late filing of the tax return(s). So, if you are registered under this obligation, you need to ensure that you adhere to the set deadlines of filing monthly tax returns.

Normally after filling in the Turnover Tax Returns Form, you need to upload the generated zipped folder/file into your KRA Portal account as part of the process of filing your Turnover Tax Returns. How To Upload Turnover Tax Returns Form On KRA Portal

Step 1: Visit KRA Portal 

The first step in the process of uploading the filled KRA Turnover Tax (TOT) Returns Form is to visit KRA Portal using https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal/

Step 2: Login to KRA Portal

Next, you will need to login to the KRA Portal by using both your KRA PIN Number and KRA Password. Afterwards, solve the arithmetic question (security stamp) and click on the “Login” button.

Step 3: Click on Returns menu then File Return

Once logged in successfully to KRA Portal, click on the “Returns” menu and from the drop down menu list, click on “File Return” to proceed to the next step.

Step 4: Select Tax Obligation

Next, you need to select the tax obligation i.e. in our case this is “Income Tax – Turnover Tax” since we are uploading the zipped Turnover Tax (TOT) Returns Form on KRA Portal. 

Step 5: Upload Turnover Tax Returns Form (zipped folder)

This is the most important step since you will be required to upload the filled Turnover Tax Form. You will take note of the following fields; Type of Return (original or amended), Return Period From, Return Period To and Upload Form. In our example, this is an original return for the month of September 2023.

Once you have uploaded the zipped Turnover Tax Returns Form, tick the check box titled “I Agree to the Terms and Conditions” and click on the “Submit” button.  A pop up window will appear “Do you want to upload the form?” click on “OK” button to upload your Turnover Tax Return Form and submit to Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) for processing.

Step 6: Download Turnover Tax Returns Receipt

Once you have successfully uploaded your Turnover Tax Returns Form, you will have to download the Returns Receipt for the same. The acknowledgement received serves as a final confirmation that your return has been uploaded and filed successfully on KRA Portal. The above 6 steps sums up the whole process of uploading the Turnover Tax Returns Form on KRA Portal.
