The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has embraced technology to advance tax literacy among learners nationwide. Teaming up with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), KRA is set to develop specialized tax e-resources tailored for students in the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). This collaboration signifies a significant stride towards simplifying tax concepts and seamlessly integrating tax education into mainstream learning.
Within this partnership, KRA will craft digital resources focusing on key subjects such as Business Studies, Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, and Social Studies. These resources aim to equip students with foundational knowledge of taxation, elucidating its purpose and impact on individuals and society.
During discussions with KICD leadership, KRA Commissioner General Mr. Humphrey Wattanga underscored the importance of instilling tax education at an early age. Recognizing the direct influence of taxation on individuals and society, Wattanga emphasized the need for young people to grasp tax matters from their formative years.
Integrating tax education content into curricula serves to demystify complex tax issues, crucial for reshaping Kenya’s tax-paying culture. Wattanga expressed confidence that this initiative will nurture a sense of responsibility towards the tax system, fostering higher compliance rates.
“Early exposure to tax education cultivates informed and responsible citizenship,” remarked Mr. Wattanga, envisioning a societal shift towards valuing a fair and efficient tax system. Dr. Samuel Obudho, Senior Deputy Director of TVET, echoed the significance of the KICD-KRA collaboration, providing an effective avenue for KRA to reach a broader audience.
Collaboratively, KICD and KRA will develop up-to-date tax literacy digital content featuring simulation environments, aiming to positively influence learners’ perceptions and attitudes towards taxes.
The partnership, targeting primary and secondary school students initially, will extend to tertiary education, focusing on prospective taxpayers. With a commitment to public outreach, the initiative seeks to engage the general public, recognizing their pivotal role in tax matters.
The e-content produced through this collaboration will cater to learners across various educational levels and the wider community, aiming to enhance tax literacy and foster a culture of understanding and compliance with tax obligations. Through accessible and innovative digital resources, the aim is to empower students and the broader public with the knowledge and skills to navigate the tax landscape effectively.
